Puberty:

Puberty is the process of physical maturation where an adolescent reaches sexual maturity and becomes capable of reproduction.

Adolescence:

Adolescence is the stage when a child grows and develops into an adult.

The world health organization (WHO) has defined adolescence age (11 -12 years).

Emotional ups and downs or “mood swings” are also characteristics of adolescents, making them emotionally unstable.  This is partly caused by the upsurge of hormones as well as worries about the physical changes happening to them.

Normal Pubertal Development:

The change from the childhood to adulthood is a gradual process that occurs at different ages and at different speeds in different people.

Physical Changes:

Puberty is characterized by an increase in growth rate and the development of secondary sexual characteristics. The marked changes in body during puberty are height and weight. Approximately   15% of adult height is achieved during puberty. The puberty growth spurt last 2 to 4 years and it generally processes the onset of secondary sex characteristics by approximately one year in both sexes. The onset of puberty is earlier in girls than boys.

Biological Maturation:

 

At the time the body is maturing on the outsides, the internal reproductive organs are also changing. In boys, testes begin to produce sperm. In girls, the ovaries begin to  release ova, and they begin to menstruate. This usually happens between the age of 1 2 and 15 although it can happen earlier or late.

Psychological Changes:

Boys and girls become increasingly self- conscious and aware of the changes taking place in their bodies during adolescence. They also begin to be aware of their own sexuality, and feel sexual desire, sometimes quite strongly. This is nearly always a difficult period emotionally as young people struggle to understand their own feelings and reactions to think in abstract terms and to empathies with others also develops during this time.

Social Adjustment:

In most societies, becoming accepted as an adult is determined more by tradition, a cultural values than by age or physical size. Adolescence can be difficult and confusing period. Adolescence may want to be recognized as adult, but their pears, parents and societies and general may not see them that way yet.

It is essential for parents to encourage healthy eating during puberty which includes:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Lean proteins
  • Whole grains
  • Dairy items

Unhealthy Foods During Puberty:

  • Processed Foods
  • Carbonated Beverages

Exercise For Puberty:

Physical activity guidelines for teens recommend that they get 1 hour or more of moderate to strong physical activity daily. In addition: Most of the physical activity should be aerobic, where they use large muscles and continue for a period of time. Examples of aerobic activity are running, swimming and dancing.
