DEFINITION:

Pregnancy is the term used to describe the period in which a fetus develops inside a woman’s womb or uterus. Pregnancy usually lasts about 40 weeks, or just over 9 months, as measured from the last menstrual period to delivery. Health care providers refer to three segments of pregnancy, called trimesters.

Trimester:
There are three trimester in pregnancy.
  • First Trimester
  • Second Trimester
  • Third Trimester

First Trimester:

First trimester is the early phase of pregnancy. First trimester start from the conception till 3 month of pregnancy.

First trimester of pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last period through to week 12.

The first trimester is a critical period, during which the fetus develops rapidly and the risk of miscarriage is highest. Women may experience symptoms such as morning sickness, fatigue, and mood swings, but also begin to feel the excitement of impending motherhood.

Symptoms Of First Trimester:

  • Nausea
  • Mood Swings
  • Sore breasts
  • Feeling tired
  • Urge to pee

Second Trimester:

The second trimester represents the middle part of your pregnancy starts from weeks 13 and ends on 26 weeks.

As the pregnancy progresses, the second trimester brings a sense of calm and stability, with many women feeling more energized and comfortable in their bodies. This is a time of rapid growth for the fetus, and women may start to feel the baby move and kick.

Symptoms Of Second Trimester:

  • Pains on the side of your belly caused by your expanding womb.
  • headaches.
  • nosebleeds.
  • bloating.
  • constipation.
  • indigestion and heartburn.
  • sore breasts.
  • leg cramps.
  • feeling hot.
  • dizziness.
  • swollen hands and feet.
  • urine infections.
  • vaginal infection.
  • darkened skin on your face or brown patches – this is known as chloasma or the “mask of pregnancy”
  • greasier, spotty skin.
  • thicker and shinier hair.

Third Trimester:

The third trimester is a time of preparation and anticipation, as women prepare for the arrival of their baby. This can be a challenging period, with physical discomfort and anxiety about the future, but also a sense of excitement and joy.

Symptoms of Third Trimester:

Here are some common symptoms that women experience during the third trimester of pregnancy :

  • Acid reflux.
  • Haemorrhoids.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Breast tenderness.
  • Protruding belly button.
  • Difficulty sleeping.
  • Swelling in your fingers, face and ankles.
  • Nausea.
  • Headache.
  • Diarrhea.

Abdominal achiness.

  • Lightning crotch.
  • Fatigue.
  • Braxton Hicks contractions.
  • Varicose veins.
  • Stretch marks.
  • Backache.
  • Insomnia.
  • Crazy dreams.
  • Clumsiness.
  • Lack of bladder control.
  • Leaky breasts.
  • Weight gain.

Throughout the pregnancy journey, women have access to various prenatal tests and screenings to monitor the health and development of the fetus.
